Since 1971, Roll N Roaster has been living by their motto, “You can have cheez on anything you pleez” — and this National French Fries day, they’re sticking with tradition.
Roll N Roaster boasts 8,000 orders of cottage fries per week, 70% with cheese. Their classic cottage fries were a favorite for the neighborhood, with their potatoes only coming from the West to ensure quality spuds.
In 2020, the eatery celebrated its 50th anniversary in Sheepshead Bay, but, in 2022, owners had to do the unthinkable and changed their iconic cottage style french fries due to their potato supplier discontinuing the production.
However, thanks to pushback from community (including an online petition that circulated asking Roll N Roaster to bring the original fries back to the menu), they found a replacement and supplier and were able to bring back the “OG fries.”
Michael Quinn, the owner of Feltman’s Hot Dogs (and the local behind the iconic fry-saving petition in 2022) said the side dish is a part of the restaurant’s DNA.
“The cottage fries are just as much Roll N Roaster as the orange-ade and the freshly baked buns. It’s their identity,” Quinn told Brooklyn Paper at the time. “I understand the pandemic, we had some challenges with supply chain issues, but I couldn’t imagine discontinuing my signature item.”
In 2023, Roll N Roaster owner and general manager Eric Rodriguez said the original fries are here to stay.
“We went through so many fries to replace them,” he told Brooklyn Paper. “I learned so much about potatoes in the last 16 months. It was a nightmare.”
The popular spot also features sweet potato fries for those looking for a hint of sweetness.
Roll N Roaster is located at 2901 Emmons Ave. in Sheepshead Bay.
