Trump says he’ll unveil vice presidential pick on RNC day 1

Trump says he'll unveil vice presidential pick on RNC day 1

Former President Trump Monday reportedly said he will announce his vice presidential pick later in the day as the Republican National Convention kicks off.

Fox News’ Bret Bair said Trump told him in an interview that he would unveil the pick sometime on Monday and teased unspecified “surprises.”

“(Trump) did confirm that he will make a VP choice today and he said ‘Bret, there are other surprises to come,’” Baier said. “So I don’t know what that means.”

It’s not known if Trump’s vice-presidential decision could be affected by the assassination attempt on him Saturday.

Trump has said he plans to stress national unity and claims he has ripped up a “humdinger” speech attacking President Biden and Democrats.

Trump had narrowed down the veepstakes to a three-person short list: Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), ex-North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida). However, sources who were briefed on the matter have confirmed to other outlets that neither Burgum nor Rubio was tapped as Trump’s No. 2.

Late last week, Trump mentioned Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) could also be in the mix.

The short list has been known for several weeks. Trump has delayed making a pick to build suspense for the decision and to enhance interest in the RNC in Milwaukee.

He has sought to keep a relatively low profile in recent weeks since President Biden’s shaky debate performance sparked disarray among Democrats and significant calls for Biden to step aside.
